Gulf Coast Expedition
El Ranchito’s traveling camp, the Gulf Coast Expedition (GCE), is a service learning journey from Shield Ranch to the Gulf of Mexico.
Eligible Participants include: 18 to 22 year-olds who are graduates of El Ranchito Conservation Corps, or have experience with a similar program offering camping and conservation work experience, or interested college students who would quality for the Pell Grant program.
Dates: July 16-28, 2018
The Journey: Travel 650 miles from Austin to the Gulf Coast and back, visiting: Shield Ranch, LCRA Redbud Center, Colorado River at Hornsby Bend, Matagorda Bay, Goose Island State Park, University of Texas Marine Science Institute, Mustang Island State Park, Padre Island National Seashore, Meadows Center for Water and the Environment at Texas State University
SERVE with hands-on projects including oyster reef construction and coastal restoration
EARN service learning hours and continuing education units. (Texas State course credit pending)
LEARN about river, wetland and coastal ecology and issues relating to water use, quality, & policy
ENHANCE your resume, career readiness, and skills. Full day “Career Lab” at Texas State University.
ENJOY kayaking, canoeing, snorkeling, swimming, fishing, and aquatic exploration.
CONNECT with other conservationists both new and established in the field. Partners include: Texas Parks and Wildlife, City of Austin, Austin Youth River Watch, Meadows Center for Water and the Environment, Lower Colorado River Authority, Hart Research Institute, University of Texas Marine Science Institute, and Texas Conservation Corps.
